Community groups and voluntary organisations in the East Marsh have already benefited from Community First Grants during the last six months, and almost £20,000 in funding has been provided for projects being undertaken by 14 different groups.
The projects supported so far have been varied and include a Community Street Party where approximately 40 residents were entertained, improvements to several Community Gardens including the provision of a green house, a patio garden, planting and storage facilities, equipment for youth clubs has been provided and cookery classes for young people funded.
Some of the groups which have benefited are Duncombe Garden residents, Your Place Community Garden, Hope Street Trust, Harbour Place, Shalom Youth Centre and Wiz Kidz Nursery.
There is still more than £18000 available this year for projects in East Marsh which meet the needs of the community, for example, by providing activities for young people, making environmental improvements, focusing on improving health, helping residents towards employment through volunteering and improved qualifications or activities which give residents social opportunities such a luncheons, social clubs etc.
Funding applications are considered by a local panel, and have to reflect what the community wants in the area. The panel will soon be creating a Community First Plan for the area which has to include the community wishes, so the panel wants to hear from residents about what they think is important, as well as from residents who think that they can help to improve East Marsh. So get in touch if you have ideas about what the area needs to improve it, or if you want to be involved in making things better.
Community First grants really can help residents, and community organisations to make East Marsh a better place, lets make sure that this funding is put to good use to support projects in this area.
