Press Release (Dec, 2012): Community First Funding: who is benefitting?

Fifteen community groups and voluntary organisations in the East Marsh have benefited from grants issued by the Community First Panel by £30,000 in funding over the last six months.

There is almost £12000 still available for allocation before the end of March for projects in the East Marsh, and as part of the Community First Plan, the panel wants to hear from residents about where they think the remaining funding should be allocated, as well as from residents who think they can help to improve the East Marsh.

Projects must meet the needs of the community, for example, by providing activities for young people, making environmental improvements, focusing on improving health, activities which help residents towards employment through volunteering and improved qualifications or activities which give residents social opportunities such a lunch clubs, social clubs etc. Funding applications are considered by a local panel, and have to reflect what the community wants in the area.

The projects supported so far have been varied and include a Community Street Party where approximately 40 residents were entertained, improvements to several Community Gardens including the provision of a green house, a patio garden, planting and storage facilities, equipment for youth organisations has been provided, cookery classes for young people funded as well as equipment to improve community IT facilities.

Groups which have benefited include Duncombe Garden and Duncombe Street residents, Your Place Community Garden, The Scouts, Hope Street Trust, Harbour Place, and Wiz Kidz Nursery.
